Bali Zoo Ends Elephant Riding, Marking a Big Win for Animal Welfare in Indonesia

Bali Zoo has ended elephant riding, a move widely seen as a positive step for animal welfare and responsible tourism in Indonesia.

The decision reflects growing awareness that elephant riding causes serious harm, despite being marketed for decades as a harmless holiday experience.

Bali Zoo now joins other regional attractions including TSI Bogor, TSI Prigen and A’Famosa, which stopped elephant riding in 2024, signalling a slow shift away from outdated wildlife tourism practices.

Why elephant riding is harmful

To make elephants accept close contact with people, many are subjected to harsh training methods that rely on fear and pain. In captivity, elephants are often kept in conditions that restrict movement, social interaction and natural behaviour.

Animal welfare investigations in Bali have repeatedly documented the physical and psychological suffering faced by elephants used for rides and performances.

Tourism standards are changing

Support for Bali Zoo’s decision has come from industry groups, including the Southeast Asian Zoos and Aquariums Association, which opposes elephant riding.

In late 2025, Bali’s conservation authority also urged wildlife attractions to move away from riding activities, warning that venues which fail to adapt risk falling behind modern tourism expectations.

How travellers can help

Tourists can play a role by:

  • Avoiding elephant riding, bathing and performances
  • Observing elephants from a safe distance
  • Booking with operators that prioritise animal welfare
  • Asking how animals are treated before booking

Progress, but work remains

While Bali Zoo’s move is a significant step, some venues in Bali continue to offer elephant rides. Until these practices end entirely, elephants will remain at risk.

Still, the shift suggests a broader change is underway, one driven by increased awareness and more responsible travel choices.
