Award-Winning Photo Of A Shy Male Orangutan Peeking Around A Tree At Tanjung Puting

In Indonesia’s Tanjung Puting National Park, a male orangutan crosses a river.

Photographer Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan stood in chest-high water to take this picture. He explains that orangutans typically avoid water, especially in situations like this one, where crocodiles may be present. But, he says, “Rapid palm oil farming has depleted their habitat and when pushed to the edge these intelligent creatures have learned to adapt to the changing landscape.”
