You Can See Batavia In 1627 Thanks To This Virtual Reality Museum Exhibit

The Westfries Museum in the Netherlands has just launched a new exhibit bringing Batavia to life using Virtual Reality.

On May 30, 1619, Jan Pietersz Coen founded Batavia, the headquarters of the VOC in the Dutch East Indies. This VR exhibit was created to commemorate 400 years since Batavia was founded, and will be open from May 30, 2019, to June 5, 2020.

In the ‘Batavia 1627 VR‘ exhibit, the oldest known painted map of Batavia was used, along with the latest virtual reality techniques to bring Batavia to life!

If you happened to be in the Netherlands over the next year, you can fly over Batavia yourself and visit the most striking places in the city. If not, check out the below images and trailer.
