The Forgotten Mongol Invasion Of Java That Changed History

800 years ago, the most vicious and feared empire in the world was the Mongol Empire. 

The leader of the Mongols and grandson of the infamous Genghis Kahn, Kublai Kahn, was the most powerful ruler in the world at the time. And when he heard about a glorious empire on the island of Java, he wanted a piece of the pie.

Kublai Kahn turned his attention to King of the Singhasari Empire, Kertanegara, who refused to pay tribute to the faraway Mongol ruler. In retaliation, Kublai Kahn sent 20,000-30,000 soldiers to invade Singhasari in 1293.

What happened next changed history…

Not only did the Mongol Empire suffer a rare defeat in battle, which served as Kublai Kahn’s last great expedition, the invasion helped give birth to the Majapahit Empire.
