A country’s flag represent its country’s glorious victory, independence and value. What is more amazing than proudly raising your country’s flag in the flag raising ceremony? In Indonesia, the group who is missioned to provide flag bearers and escorts the red and white flag is called as Paskibraka Troop. Paskibraka is the shorthand for Pasuka Pengibar Bendera Pusaka (Bendera Pusaka Flag Hoisting Troop).
Gloria Natapradja Hamel was disqualified from Paskibraka team for the flag raising ceremony on 17th August 2016 due to her dual identity issue as she is a daughter of French father and Indonesian mother. The problem arose after the announcement in Istana Negara that stated Gloria has the passport published in France, which according to Laws in Indonesia year 2006 No. 12, if an individual has a passport published from another country, then she/he shall remove her/his nationality as an Indonesian. It was a big shock for Gloria, especially because she was accepted at first by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to join the Paskibraka Troop's quarantine training.
But the journey hasn’t ended yet. She was given a new chance by Indonesian President, Joko Widodo and also Vice-President, Jusuf Kalla. According to (the same) Laws in Indonesia year 2006 No. 12, a person has the chance to choose his/her identity until the age of 18 which means that Gloria, who is still 16 years old still has the chance to become an Indonesian (later on). As for now she becomes qualified to join the Paskibraka Team.
Gloria Joined the Flag Lowering Ceremony with Bima Team
Bima Team that was commanded by Captain Inf. Amirul Husin, succeeded in flag lowering ceremony on Wednesday afternoon (17/08). The team was made up of three groups which were group 17, 8 and 45. The flag has been lowered by group 8; Ilham Massaid from Bengkulu, Alldi Padlyma Allamurochman from West Java and Amarik Fakhri Marliansyah from Jakarta. The flag was being carried by group 17 and the flag-tray carrier was Cut Aura Maghfirah Putri. In this team, Gloria got the chance to became one of the team’s guards of honor.
There were some critics in response to the given position to Gloria. However, the person responded with a wise smile, “Become one of the team’s guards of honor is as important as the flag raisers. Everyone’s role in the group are important. The importance level of group 8 and 17 is the same. Without group 17, group 8 can do nothing and vice versa.”
Despite all the pressure she got from being disqualified as Paskibraka Troop, she responded to her mother’s call who told her to come back home by saying:
“I still have the passion, Mom.”
Indeed she is a daughter, a friend, a sister that we should be proud of!
