The sisters launched the campaign in October 2013 – a time when the problem was obvious, but few were doing anything to stop it.

The problem seemed insurmountable.

But their first success was getting the Governor of Bali to sign a memorandom of understanding of the islands plastic problem.

Fast forward 5 years, and the young girls have grown into young women inspiring a whole generation of plastic-conscious youths, while also fostering the sentiment in the grown-ups who clearly don’t know it all.

We want to share our whole hearted congratulations with the sisters and everyone behind the movement they’ve worked so hard to ferment.

If Bali, Indonesia and, indeed, the rest of the world move to a plastic-free existence, Bye Bye Plastic Bags will have had a huge role in making it possible.

Well deserved
