Bali Then And Now – Cartoon By Australian Illustrator Johannes Leak

Johannes Leak is an illustrator based just north of Sydney, Australia.

One of his most famous works is the below piece of art called Bali Then And Now, which depicts how he thinks Bali has changed for the worse over the years.

Some may argue this illustration only rings true for the popular tourist hubs of Bali like Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu.

Others may say this is basically what happens to every tourist destination in the world as it gets more well-known.

There’s no doubt about Bali’s rise in popularity. Last year when Mastercard released its Global Destination Cities Index for 2018, Bali made the Top 20 most visited places in the world for the first time ever.

This year Bali is in the top 20 again, moving up 1 spot to the 19th most visited place on Earth.

Then Chaplin’s on his second visit in 1936:

“Bali is ruined. I shan’t be back”.
