10 Famous Indonesians Who Have Broken Through To Global Recognition

Despite having a huge pool of ‘local fans’, it always seems impossible for Indonesians to hit a bigger stage than their own country. However, there are a handful of Indonesians that have done the country proud and excelled in their own fields to gain international attention.

Here we celebrate those who have caught the eyes (and ears!) of the world, here are 10 famous Indonesians who have broken through to global recognition:

1. Joey Alexander (Jazz Prodigy)

Joey Alexander is an Indonesian jazz pianist and is considered a child prodigy. He released his first album, My Favorite Things, on May 12, 2015, at age 11. Alexander taught himself to play jazz at age six, and has performed for Herbie Hancock, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. In 2014, Wynton Marsalis invited Alexander to play at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2014 Gala, which made him an “overnight sensation”. Source: Wikipedia

2. Brian Immanuel (Rapper)

Brian Imanuel (born September 21, 1999), better known by his stage name Rich Chigga, is an Indonesian rapper and comedian from Jakarta. He is best known for his viral debut single “Dat $tick”, which was released in March 2016. Source: Wikipedia

3. Iko Uwais (Actor)

Iko Uwais (born Qorny Uwais; February 12, 1983) is an Indonesian actor, stuntman, fight choreographer, and martial artist. Iko was discovered by director Gareth Evans, who was filming a documentary about silat in Iko’s training hall. After signing a five-year contract with Gareth Evans and his production company, Iko resigned from his daytime job as an operational driver at Esia, an Indonesian telecom company. 4. Anggun (French Superstar)

Anggun is the Asian artist with the highest album sales outside Asia, with her releases being certified gold and platinum in some European countries. She is the first Indonesian artist to have success in European and American record charts. 5. Agnes Monica (International Pop Singer)

Agnes Monica Muljoto known by her stage name Agnez Mo started her career in the entertainment industry at the age of six as a child singer. She has recorded three children’s albums and became a presenter of several children’s television programs. In 2003, Mo released her first adult album entitled And the Story Goes, which catapulted her name back in the Indonesian music industry. Mo’s success in her homeland encouraged her to set a target to get a career in the international music scene. On the second album released in 2005, Whaddup A.. ‘?!, she collaborated with American singer Keith Martin for single “I’ll Light a Candle”. 6. Taufik Hidayat

Taufik Hidayat is a retired Indonesian badminton player. He is a former World and Olympic champion in men’s singles. He has also won the Indonesian Open six times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006). When he was young, he joined the SGS Club, a badminton club in Bandung, where he trained under Lie Sumirat. Hidayat won the men’s singles competition in badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics. In August 2005, he won the men’s singles competition at the IBF World Championships.
